OPP cruiser struck by transport on 401

(Dec 16th, 2017 - Belleville, ON) An OPP officer and a transport driver are lucky to be alive after a serious collision on the 401 westbound on Saturday morning shortly before 9 a.m.

OPP say the OPP cruiser was on the side of the 401 westbound just west of Wallbridge Loyalist Rd in Belleville attending to the site of a previous collision when the driver of a loaded car carrier lost control, sending a loose vehicle to land on the hood of the cruiser with the officer inside.

Extrication crews were initially called to the scene but the occupants were both removed from their respective vehicles without the need for extrication equipment. While damage to the cruiser was significant, OPP say the officer was uninjured. The operator of the transport was also reportedly uninjured.

The highway was closed in that area until about 4 p.m. in the afternoon.

OPP would like to remind travellers of the importance of leaving extra space between vehicles during winter driving conditions, as well as the need to slow down and move over for responding emergency vehicles on the side of the road.
